Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the name given to a group of degenerative diseases of the retina that cause progressive, painless loss of central vision. If you consider how much this would impact your life, think about how slow vision loss would affect your ability to see fine detail, drive, read and even recognise faces.

    • Have your eyes tested and make sure the macula is checked.
    • Don’t smoke.
    • Keep a healthy lifestyle, control your weight and exercise regularly.
    • Eat a healthy well-balanced diet,
      • Limit your intake of fats
      • Eat fish two to three times a week
      • Eat dark green leafy vegetables and fresh fruit daily
      • Choose low glycemic index carbs.
    • Provide adequate protection for your eyes from sunlight exposure, especially when young.

You are what you eat

We have all heard the saying “you are what you eat” many times, but a recent study into how nutrition impacts age-related AMD has given more truth to the saying than ever before.

Age-related eye disease study (AREDS) found that a specific formulation of antioxidants and zinc showed up to 30% reduction in the rate of progression to advanced AMD and its associated vision loss. What does that mean? It means eating certain foods can maximise the nutrients you need for healthy eyes, thus reducing the risk of AMD.

The best foods to eat are:

      • Green leafy vegetables: spinach, Kale, broccoli, rocket, cabbage
      • Orange/Yellow Vegetables/Fruit: capsicum, carrots, pumpkin, oranges, squash
      • Blue/Purple Vegetables/Fruit: beetroot, blueberries, Goji Berries, kiwi fruit
      • Red/Pink Vegetables/Fruit: red grapes, cherries, raspberries, capsicum

Foods to avoid:

      • Too much red meat, sugar, refined carbs, fried, trans and saturated fats, processed foods.
