Glaucoma and its progression as an eye disease can be significantly impacted upon by the vitamins and nutrients a person eats every day. Multiple studies have found several vitamins and minerals seem to have a protective role in aiding the prevention of significant vision loss in glaucoma.
No research exists that indicates diet alone can control or cure glaucoma. It is always best to alter your own diet to ensure you are maximising the nutrients you need for healthy eyes. Ginkgo Biloba is protective against oxidative stress which is thought to play a role in the nerve degeneration that occurs in glaucoma. One pilot study showed that 40mg of Ginkgo 3 times a day led to improved results in visual field testing in Normal Tension Glaucoma patients. Blood flow to the optic nerve is essential to maintain structure and protect against glaucomatous nerve damage. Magnesium, Omega 3 fish oils and Vitamin C all play a role in promoting vascular regulation and blood flow to the nerve. All should be part of the diet of glaucoma patients or those at high risk of glaucoma, such as a family history.
WHAT SHOULD I DO TO GUARD AGAINST DEVELOPING GLAUCOMA?
- Visit Envision Optical for regular eye health checks at least every two years
- Follow Envision Optical optometrists recommendation and have the health of your optic nerve recorded by retinal photography to aid in future comparison
- If anyone in your family develops glaucoma, make sure everyone knows that family members are at a greater risk of developing glaucoma and risking subsequent vision loss
- Make sure that you have adequate Vitamin C intake along with magnesium, Fish oil and even Gingko Biloba. No matter what: its good for you!
