The Legend of Vuarnet
Vuarnet was born from a partnership between Parisian optometrist Roger Pouilloux, and French alpine skiing legend, Jean Vaurnet. Pouilloux was a mountain enthusiast who was based in the heart of Paris. In 1957 he launched the Skilynx lens. The lens allowed skiers to make out inundations of the ground better and ski in white-out conditions due to its incredible brightness. In 1960, Vaurnet won gold at the Squaw Valley Olympics Games. He was wearing the 002 Skilynx lenses given to him by Pouilloux. After this victory, a partnership was formed. Nine years later, the 006 was worn by Alain Delon in La Piscine, a French film by Jacques Deray, taking this style to fame. Delon wore his 006s not just on set, but also out and about on the town.
The Vuarnet Glacier
The Glacier model was introduced in 1980 with celebrites such as Miles Davis loving the unique look inspired by frames worn by 1930s airline pilots. The 80s were big for Vuarnet, especially in the States. Mick Jagger and the Kennedy’s were just some that were drawn to the elegance and pure ‘made in France’ style of the Vuarnet styles. 1984 was a big year for Vuarnet. As an official sponsor for the Los Angeles summer olympics, new expressions could be heard on the radio by Californian speakers saying: “It’s a Vuarnet day today!” when they were describing a sunny day.
Continuing on the prominence of Vuarnet, in 1995 Vuarnet became the official sponsor of the prestigious America’s Cup. This great sailing race saw teams from around the globe wearing Vuarnet sunglasses. The legend continues today, with Vuarnet the official partner of Courchevel and Mégève ski schools in France alongside Italian ski schools Cortina d’Ampezzo and Sestriere.
Vuarnet Mineral Lenses
Vuarnet are specialists in mineral lenses and have been doing so for over 50 years. NASA use mineral lenses in their telescopes and they are highly trusted for their optical quality and high levels of protection. Compared to plastic lenses, mineral lenses offer clearer, high-resolution vision. All the Vuarnet lenses are made in France. You’ll find four different tints on the lenses. Grey tints that render colours to perfection. Grey-blue tints, a Vuarnet world exclusive, enhances luminosity, improving contrast and colour definition. Brown tints that improve contrast and depth perception. Lastly, yellow-green tints, another Vuarnet world exclusive, which improves contrast, gives better perception of reliefs and enhances luminosity. There is a strong commitment from the research and development team at Vuarnet. They are committed to high performance and certified quality frames and lenses being offered.
