If you close your eyes and rub them hard, you’ll likely see dots, spots and flashes of colours. These images are called phosphenes. They are produced by pressure on your eyes. Your retina and visual processing area of the brain translate the pressure into all sorts of patterns. That’s why being knocked in the eye can make you “see stars”!
