What are the most common eye problems?

eye examination

Good question! As always, it depends… There are multiple types of problems affecting the eyes. The true most common problems are refractive errors or blurred vision. These types of problems require prescription glasses, contacts or Ortho-k therapy to correct. Of these hyperopia is the most common, then myopia with blurred distance vision.

Presbyopia or poor near focus is the most common in the over-40’s category. Whilst accommodative-convergence problems affect up to 25% of children, many of whom are just regarded as poor readers or “outdoor kids”. These are disorders of the focusing and eye aiming system, which results in difficulties reading and learning. These are usually corrected by a combination therapy of spectacles and vision therapy.

In terms of eye diseases which are more common in the over 50’s, the primary ones include: glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. These all become more common the older you get, indeed, pretty much everyone ends up with cataracts in some form or another, although not everyone needs surgery or treatment.

So the upshot of all of the above is, get your eyes examined every couple of years at least, because there’s lots of potential things that can go wrong, and risking your sight just isn’t worth it!
