Why is it so important to wear sunglasses?
The eyes are made of light sensitive tissues and are particularly susceptible to damage by sunlight. This is particularly relevant in a high sun exposure climate like the Gold Coast.
Sunglasses perform two functions:
1) improving visual comfort by reducing glare, and
2) protecting the eye tissues from damage by UV rays.
Visual comfort refers to being sensitive to glare from the sun and is best demonstrated by squinting your eyes in full sun. A properly fitted pair of sunglasses, particularly polarized lenses like the Maui Jim brand we recommend, will eliminate the desire to squint by cutting out reflected glare and by reducing the brightness of glare without diminishing the quality of your vision.
All sunnies sold in Australia are required by law to block damaging UV rays. This will happen independent of whether they are polarized or not. Blocking UV rays will reduce the risk of skin cancers around and on the surface of the eyes, cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygiums.
With modern technology you can also have sunglasses made up in your prescription including multifocals in polarized options.
