A proper balance of fatty acids is essential to good health including your eyes.
Fats are used in every cell membrane in our body for the normal production of cells, muscles, nerves and organs. Essential fatty acids are those that our bodies can’t produce themselves, so they must be part of our diet. The two most important EFA’s when it comes to eyes are Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They play an essential role in the development and maintenance of vision.
The balance between the two is extremely important with the recommended ratio of omega 6:omega 3 being 4:1. In many western diets its as high as 15:1!! Omega-3 fatty acids include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicoapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA)
