René LACOSTE was a French tennis sensation who created the “Crocodile” brand in 1933 with André GILLIER, the owner and President of the largest French knitwear manufacturing firm of that time.
The Lacoste crocodile logo became a phenomenon after the American press nicknamed René “the Crocodile” after a certain match, which conveyed the tenacity he displayed on the tennis court of never letting go of his prey. From then on René had the crocodile embroidered on his personal tour clothing and released his first catalogue of clothing for the French apparel brand in 1933. In the 1950’s Lacoste began exporting it’s classic sportswear to the United States. The label fast became “the status symbol of the competent sportsman,” influencing the clothing choices of the upper class American male. It has now grown into the epitomy of male fashion being one of the most popular brands in the United States, sporting the “preppy wardrobe”.
Today the Lacoste brand continues to offer the same quality, comfort and solidity on which it built its name and which constitute its uniqueness.
Lacoste is cross generational in its appeal, from the young & fashion oriented, through to the sophisticated, yet relaxed country club scene. The Lacoste man relies on the essential components of the cult brand because of its sense of elegance and fair play.
The Lacoste Collection
The eyewear collection infuses designs & materials referencing the iconic polo shirts, clean fresh colourations and the renowned “croc” logo. Most of the collection is very much a preppy-chic sportswear staple for the country-club crowd. However, it is transforming itself into a more secure streetwise vibe, incorporating bolder colors and new silhouettes under the direction of Christophe Lemaire. The collection has quality frames suiting a wide variety of personal styles and face shapes. Precise style and effortless fluidity are translated onto eyewear, creating an elegant, defined collection synonymous with the Lacoste brand. Lacoste – authenticity, elegance, optimism and audacity!
