Why Kiwi Fruit is Good for Eye Health.

Kiwi fruit is another food that is full of important nutrients for your eye health. It is packed full of Vitamin C which is highly beneficial for health eyes. Vitamin C may reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Vitamin C is a water soluble nutrient and powerful anti-oxidant. Its primary function is to maintain the bodies’ collagen proteins which are an integral component of skin, ligaments, bones and the sclera of the eye. It also plays a role in wound healing, prevention of haemorrhaging, and also helps with fighting infections. The RDA for Vitamin C is 45mg for adults, however many researchers advocate 500-2000mg a day which has been shown to lower heart disease risk by up to 35% and reduced rates of cataracts.

Kiwi fruit is also a great source of Lutein and Zeaxanthin which may prevent cataracts and has been shown to reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

Rockmelon and Kiwi Fruit Ice Blocks

This week we bring you a recipe for Rockmelon and Kiwi Fruit Ice Blocks. Along with the goodness of the kiwi fruit, rockmelon is also good for your eyes with it being a great source of Vitamins A and C. As we have mentioned in previous posts, Vitamin A may protect against night blinds and dry eyes. Combined with the benefits of Vitamin C, this recipe is wonderful for your eye health.


  • 6 ice block moulds

(per ice block)

  • 1 kiwi fruit (mashed or sliced)
  • 50g chopped rockmelon
  • orange and/or apple juice

How to Make (Option 1):

  1. Put fruit in mould. Fill the rest of the ice block mould with juice.

How to Make (Option 2):

  1. If doing two-tone blocks, fill 1/3 cup with one type of fruit, add juice and freeze. Will take approximately 4 hours to freeze.
  2. When frozen add the second fruit, fill to top with juice and freeze again.
