Bioflavenoids or vitamin P are essential for the proper absorption and use of vitamin C.
They assist vitamin C in keeping the collagen in healthy condition. They also help reinforce capillaries and prevent bleeding. Crucially, the blood vessel leakage that occurs in the retina in conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and hypertensive retinopathy may all be reduced to some degree by the use of a combination of vitamin C and bioflavonoids.
Bilberries and blueberries both contain high amounts of the flavonoid pigments; anthocyanins which are powerful antioxidants. These can help reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration and maintain blood vessel health. Anthocyanins are also found in raspberries, plums, cherries, eggplant and red wine!!
